OPPORTUNITIES FOR PROFIT FROM ORGANIC FARMING
The opportunities for organic farming include: environmental protection, animal welfare, food security and quality, social justice, resources utilized naturally, and financial rewards. The organic market has developed as a food resource to meet the growing needs of the consumer and milk processors.
The growth of farming and food production is impressive. The demand is outweighing the supply.
WHAT IS THE FUTURE?
Organic food production fits well with concerns for: food safety and quality, the environment, animal welfare, stability of farm income, fair standard of living, employment opportunities, and income opportunities. Globally organic food production is projected to explode in demand. When people purchase organic food, they can be assured it is a good decision for themselves, their families, and also contributes to the well being of our environment. The organic farms and all feedstuffs will have to be organic certified. The farms will need to practice farming of good stewardship, preserve biodiversity, and minimize toxic outputs by eliminating harmful chemicals, fertilizer antibiotics and growth hormones, nitrogen leaching and soil erosion. Organic farming protects and conserves water resources. People today can purchase organic farming products, vegetables, meat, and mild primarily in health food stores. However, this trend is changing because today the major grocery chains are interested in meeting the demand for their customers.
WHAT IS ORGANIC FARMING?
The organic farms will not use chemicals, insecticides, fertilizers, antibiotics, growth hormones or fungicides in an environmentally harmful manner. They utilize farming practices in a natural way as was done before technology became such a big influence. Rotating crops between fields helps control pests, such as insects, and improves soil fertility. Planting selected flowers and plants to attract beneficial pests will ward off unwanted pests. Organic farming will produce nutrient balanced fertile soil that enhances the growth in plants or feedstuffs for livestock. Keeping chemicals and fertilizers off the land protects water quality and wildlife.
WHAT ABOUT DAIRY COWS?
In producing milk the farms will not feed the dairy cows antibiotics or hormones. They will only use organic feed.
WHAT IS CERTIFIED ORGANIC MILK?
The milk has been inspected by a licensed qualified third party agency to verify organic quality to the consumer. Several certification agencies exist across the United States. The certification seal means:
- No harmful chemicals, antibiotics, fertilizers, or hormones have been applied or used for feed for at least three years.
- The farmer and animals have annual certification inspections
- The dairy farm has kept detailed and accurate records of the farm
- They farm in a manner that is beneficial to improve the soil and control pests
